Welcome to Owlswood Lodge,
Covid 19 Update - Owlswood Lodge is open again for business on 20th March 2021 . We hope that by then restrictions to travel will allow visitors to return to Orkney , however please be reassured that if cancellations are Covid related , we will fully refund deposits and balance payments . Please note that we may also have to cancel your booking if we ourselves require to self isolate and although this would be very unfortunate , we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible should this be the case .
Please also be reassured that we are complying with all recommended cleaning regimes , however we will be doing same day changeovers on a Saturday with guests leaving at 10am and new guests arriving at 3pm . If you are uncomfortable with this arrangement , I am also happy to accept your cancellation and return your deposit .
I regularly update my Facebook page ( Owlswood Lodge Self catering Orkney ) and keep the availability page on the website up to date so feel free to look at these .
We look forward to welcoming you back to Orkney and Owlswood Lodge in the future , meanwhile keep safe .
Carol and Vince Mainland
Owlswood Lodge was purpose built to offer self-catering accommodation on the mainland of Orkney for up to 6 people. The house sits in an elevated position with panoramic views looking over Scapa Flow and the South Isles but is conveniently only 4 miles from Kirkwall
The house is built in a traditional style with welsh slate roof, flagstone floors and multi fuel stove but has all the comforts of modern living including WiFi and Hot Tub . Under floor heating, powered by an environmentally friendly ground source heat pump ensures that the Lodge is always cosy even when Orkney experiences several changes of weather in one day! The environment is very important to us and all our cleaning products are eco-friendly. Our flag stones and stone for the dykes came from a local source and we encourage re-cycling. Our electricity is usage is supplemented by a wind turbine . We were delighted to receive a Gold Award from the Green Tourist Business Scheme .
BIRDWATCHERS –We are members of the RSPB and the house is located adjacent to Orkney’s Hobbister RSPB reserve – bird watching from the window! The open moorland near the house means there are lots of opportunities to see grouse , pheasant , snipe , lapwings ( teeicks ) , curlew etc. and for keen bird watchers we regularly see hen harriers too . Hobbister reserve includes Waulkmill Bay which has acres of sand when the tide is out and is a bit of a sun trap on a bonnie day.
FISHERMEN –Orkney is a fisherman’s paradise with lots of lochs for wild brown trout fishing and the long coastline offers plentiful opportunities for sea angling from boat or shore. We can provide information on boat hire, ghillie services and 'visitor membership' for the Orkney Trout Fishing Association prior to your visit. We can even arrange to have your ‘big ones ‘vacuum packed and /or smoked for you to take home. The larger lochs of Harray , Stenness and Broadhouse are approximately 20 minutes’ drive away and the smaller Kirbister Loch is just a 5 minute drive down the road- ideal for that evening ‘dabble ‘ !
WALKERS - there a hundreds of walking opportunities in Orkney ranging from short strolls or the new 55 mile St Magnus Way which passes along the cliff tops below Owlswood Lodge . Whatever the weather a camera is essential ! We would be delighted if you shared your pictures on our facebook page .
Finally ,we hope that you will find Owlswood Lodge is the perfect base for your Orkney experience .
We have tried to pay attention to all the details (large and small) which will make your holiday perfect .
We look forward to meeting you soon …….
